A Day with Cat Byrnes
Paulie B spends a day walking through the city and talking with New York street photographer Cat Byrnes for Walkie Talkie.
About Cat Byrnes
Cat Byrnes grew up in Kingston, Pennsylvania, and calls herself a third-generation artist. At Pace University in New York, she studied photography and painting, with minors in anthropology and art history. She lives in New York and takes most of her photos on the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Her camera comes along even when she runs errands. She wanders the city without a set plan and is drawn to its unpredictability: "The process of not knowing what will appear is what's intriguing to me." Byrnes shoots on film and develops it herself in her studio. Her work also includes oil pastel landscapes on raw canvas.
Konnotation Press published her books GIRLWORLD and Anthology of Still Lifes. Each was also the subject of a solo exhibition in New York: GIRLWORLD at the Leica Store & Gallery and Anthology of Still Lifes at Gelatin Labs. Her earlier book NOTHING LEFT BUT HEALING was published by Pomegranate Press. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, among other publications.
