A Box of Ten Photographs: The Odyssey of Diane Arbus

A museum talk about Diane Arbus's portfolio of ten photographs.

Ten photographs by Diane Arbus are the starting point for A Box of Ten Photographs: The Odyssey of Diane Arbus, a talk from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In just over 106 minutes, photographers who knew her and experts who have studied her work for decades discuss the portfolio, her photography, and the magazine world she worked in.

The panel responds to archival audio clips. You hear recollections from Harold Hayes, former editor-in-chief of Esquire, and Marvin Israel, former art director of Harper's Bazaar. Artist Jasper Johns also speaks in a recording. He bought the portfolio directly from Arbus.

The conversations give you background on the ten photographs and Arbus's relationships with editors, photographers, and a buyer of her work. You hear different perspectives: personal memories from people who knew her, alongside insights from researchers who have spent years studying her photography.
